Among the earliest references to the Champagne Cocktail are Jerry Thomas's How to Mix Drinks, or The Bon Vivant's Companion (1862) and the Mark Twain novel Innocents Abroad (1869). Despite these famous references, however, it is widely accepted that the drink found popularity after bartender John Dougherty won an 1899 New York cocktail competition. His victorious—and very similar—concoction was called a "Business Brace".Among the earliest references to the Champagne Cocktail are Jerry Thomas's How to Mix Drinks, or The Bon Vivant's Companion (1862) and the Mark Twain novel Innocents Abroad (1869).
