The Fairmont Dallas is pleased to announce Mikki Mallow as Artist in Residence. As a participant in the Artist in Residence program, established to support local and regional artists, Ms. Mallow will live and work on-site at the hotel from July 1, 2012 through September 30, 2012. At the conclusion of her residency, Ms. Mallow will contribute a special piece to The Fairmont Dallas' permanent art collection.

A Michigan native, Ms. Mallow discovered her passion for art at a very young age. She relocated to Dallas and attended the Art Institute of Dallas, earning an Associate of Applied Arts degree in interior design in 1997. After graduating, she worked in the interior design field for several years, developing an appreciation for mixing color and texture. Ms. Mallow later decided to embark on a solo art career, initially painting abstract and conceptual pieces in acrylic on canvas. Primarily self-taught, her body of work gradually evolved to encompass portraits, sculpture and glass pieces. The subject and themes of Ms. Mallow's pieces vary; however the use of bold, vibrant color is her artistic signature.

Ms. Mallow has exhibited work in numerous local and regional group and solo art shows. In April 2012, Ms. Mallow began a project titled "I'm Seeing Someone" in which she will complete a series of portraits, culminating in a final exhibit in April 2013. Portraits from the series are currently on display in the hotel lobby.

Throughout her tenure as Artist-in-Residence, Ms. Mallow will be working in the glass-front design studio located on the "O" level of the hotel. Hotel guests and members of the public are encouraged to visit the studio to interact with the artist and watch her at work. Artist in Residence studio hours for July are Monday, Tuesday, Friday from 10:00 am – 6:00 pm; for August and September, Monday through Friday 10:00 am – 6:00 pm; and by appointment.

Artist's Statement – "I'm Seeing Someone" (April 2012 – April 2013)

"My mission is to interpret the uniqueness of individuality through you: the painted.  I am taking on the ambitious project of painting a year's worth of portraits. I will get a glimpse of each subject from a series of photographs sent to me; these images will inspire an in-depth conversation as I get to know the subjects and their lives. I hope to capture the true essence and uniqueness of every person and communicate their story through art." – Mikki Mallow

ABOUT THE ARTIST IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM

The Fairmont Dallas' Artist-in-Residence program is a collaborative initiative with Ross Akard Gallery featuring local, regional and national artists who reside in the hotel for three months at a time while working in an onsite studio located on the "O" level in the hotel's south tower. Artwork created throughout the length of the artist's stay serves various purposes – some is displayed in public areas of the hotel, others illuminate the hotel's themed Arts District Suite and a number of select pieces benefit various philanthropic efforts.
