Any guest staying at Fairmont Baku, Flame Towers will enjoy an incredible view over both the city of Baku and the unique Caspian Sea, the largest landlocked body of water on earth.

Bordered to the north by Russia, to the west by Azerbaijan, to the south by Iran, to the south east by Turkmenistan and the north east by Kazakhstan, it is said this body of water is known by over 60 different names. Once part of the ancient Paratethys Sea, it became essentially a large lake 5.5 million years ago due to a tectonic uplift.

It contains three times more water than all five of North America's Great Lakes combined and 80% of the world's caviar is harvested from this very spot. Private yachts can be hired to cruise along the sea however there are cheaper boat trips available, taking about 20 - 30 minutes in total.

If one ventures along the coast, 16 miles to the south of Baku, construction can be seen as a huge new city is being built to house over a million residents. The Khazar Islands, also known as the Caspian Islands, consist of 41 artificial islands that will spread 3,000 hectares over the Caspian Sea. This ambitious project, expected to be completed between 2020 and 2050, will be home, if all goes according to plan, to the world's tallest building - the Azerbaijan Tower.
