With over 129 years of history (77 in the current building), the fabled Fairmont Hotel Vancouver would have a lot of stories to tell if its walls could talk. It is an ideal location for filmmaking storytellers too; nearly 50 movies and TV shows have been filmed on property throughout the years.
Behind the Scenes Tidbits
- Fans of E.L. James’ blockbuster hit 50 Shades of Grey will recognize the hotel as Portland’s “Heathman’s Hotel”. The fictional Christian Grey stayed in the real life Lieutenant Governor’s Suite and the now infamous elevator scene was also filmed on-site. The sequel to this blockbuster is out in theatres now and you just might see some familiar views, watch ET exclusive 6 secrets from '50 Shades Darker'.
- A-List movie star and Vancouver native, Ryan Reynolds filmed Deadpool in his hometown. One of the movie’s most famous battle scenes was shot on the Georgia Viaduct – just down the street from Hotel Vancouver.
- In the 1990’s, there were few TV shows bigger than the X-Files. The show was filmed at Fairmont Hotel Vancouver on numerous occasions. Rumor has it that a cameraman working on the show spotted our famous Lady in Red in a window, left his equipment and never returned. In true X-Files fashion, we can neither confirm nor deny this. However, the show did give a little nod to the hotel; in the episode ‘One Breath’, The Smoking Man’s Address is listed as 900 West Georgia – the same as Fairmont Hotel Vancouver.
- Legendary actor, Gary Cooper was rumored to have hitched a ride back to his room at Hotel Vancouver on a street-cleaning machine!
