 Library:

Just outside of the Library, beside the Grandfather clock, was the "lieu of residence" of one of Empress' most famous visitor named John Rowland.  He had been visiting The Empress every night for 30 years, sitting in the same chair from 6 to 10 pm.  Letters and postcards from all over the world were sent to him, since he was a hotel fixture as well as a great favourite of returning guests.  Those letters were simply addressed:  John Rowland, By the Grandfather Clock, Empress Hotel.

With the years passing, Mr. Rowland's wardrobe became shabbier and shabbier, wearing threadbare coats.  However his courtliness remained unchanged.  With the years, the chair also became shabbier and shabbier.  But not to displease our famous visitor, during the day the hotel hid the chair under a slipcover, and would whisk it off just before he arrived…

Today The Library is one of The Fairmont Empress' most sought after event venues. Perfect for an intimate wedding, small boardroom and family gathering, the original ceiling of The Library graces all who enter. A historic library and a collection of vintage artwork embelish this beautifully quaint space overlooking Victoria's beautiful Inner Harbour.
